How to care for safety shoes in sandy and wet conditions
Working in hot climates where dust, sand and moisture accompany every step requires a special approach to equipment. This is especially true of safety footwear. Safety shoes under such conditions are subjected to enormous stresses: internal moisture, aggressive external environment, clogging sand – all this can drastically reduce the service life of even a quality pair. In order for shoes to remain reliable and comfortable, they need to be properly cared for. And we’re not just talking about weekend cleaning, we’re talking about a systematic approach.
Why care is a necessity
In many countries, protecting shoes is a matter of hygiene. In Middle Eastern countries, it is a matter of survival. For example, the TALAN models adapted for hot climates use abrasion-resistant materials and ventilation technology, but even these require care to maintain their claimed performance. Otherwise, the inner lining quickly deteriorates, the shock-absorbing properties are lost, and the protective elements start to press and rub. All of this leads to injuries and discomfort that could have been easily avoided.
Sand: the invisible but dangerous enemy of footwear
It’s everywhere. It’s fine, sharp, abrasive. Sand can ruin a zipper, unravel seams and erase the protective coating of the sole in a matter of days. What to do.
- Clean after every work day. Even if your shoes don’t seem dirty, sand can hide in the creases, under the insole, and in ventilation holes. Use a soft brush, preferably with a long pile. Clean the sole tread and side seams.
- Dry cleaning is a priority. Moisture + sand = quick death to the lining. Try to remove the sand dry. If you do use a damp cloth, dry the shoe thoroughly.
- Dust-repellent impregnation. Use special sprays to protect against dust and sand. This not only makes subsequent cleaning easier, but also protects against micro-damage to the surface.
High humidity: How to make your work shoes last a long time
In seaside areas and facilities with high humidity, shoes literally “suffocate”. And if no action is taken, safety shoes turn into a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus. What do we do?
- Replacement insoles are a must. Use antiseptic, antibacterial or absorbent insoles. Change them every day. Even the most expensive shoes won’t help if the inside doesn’t dry.
- Dry properly. Never dry shoes in direct sunlight or under a heater. This spoils the materials and deforms the shape. It is better to use a temperature-controlled electric dryer or a newspaper filler (change every 2-3 hours).
- Water repellent treatment. Regularly apply a spray that forms a protective film. Especially in the lacing area, tongue and back where water penetrates most often.
How to prolong the life of safety shoes in the UAE climate
- Ventilate your shoes your safety shoes should dry well before starting your work day. Allow air access to the inside.
- Store in a dry, dust-free place. Shoes should not stand in mud or on hot concrete.
- Clean the hardware: buckles, zippers, eyelets. They are often affected by sand.
- Renew impregnations – remember that protective coatings wash off and need to be reapplied at least every 2-3 tizhns.
When protection starts with detailing
Safe footwear means daily comfort, confidence and hygiene. In a climate where heat combines with moisture and dust, proper care is your savings, your safety and your stability. Take care of your shoes and they will last much longer.
